February 12, 2015: Woodblock Printing with Laura Barnes
Laura holds a BA in Fine Art from Chapman University. Her style combines realistic depiction with abstract and decorative elements. In her paintings she uses intense color and natural subjects such as animals. In addition to painting, she prints using wood block carving. She will be demonstrating this technique of making art.


January 8, 2015: Plein Air Painting
En plein air is a French expression meaning "in the open air" and is often used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Working in natural light under an umbrella that diffuses the light, plein air artists seek interesting locations to create their works of art. Luz Maria Perez is a  founding member of Plein Air Artists of Riverside. She has been painting since she was a child and now paints weekly with PAAR and teaches in her studio.

November 13, 2014: The Medium of Encaustic

Encaustic is an ancient painting medium that uses pigments mixed with hot wax to create art. CCMA artist member Karen Karlsson will describe the history, manufacture and use of encaustic as a medium for painting, collage and sculpture. The talk will conclude with a guided walk through the encaustic works on display in the Burnt Offerings exhibit in the museum's South Gallery.

October 10, 2014: Painting with Pastels
An artist for over 40 years, ada m. passaro is now focused on using soft pastels in sticks as her predominant medium. She is a signature member of Sierra Pastel Society as well as a member of Pastel Society of the West Coast, Pastel Society of San Diego and Watercolor West. Ada is demonstrating how pastels can be used to create a painting.

September 11, 2014: Painting on Silk
Diane Ricks is a watercolorist who combines her passion for art with her passion for fashion design. She dyes and paints her own fabric, then uses the fabrics to create clothing and quilts. In addition to demonstrating the art of painting on silk, Diane is giving a trunk show -- a display of her fashion collection.

August 14, 2014: Right Brain Drawing
Sylvia Megerdichian, founder of Art Box Studio and CCMA 2013 Artist of the Year shared a technique to help artists draw. By focusing on the negative space surrounding an object rather than on the object itself, the artist uses background to bring out qualities of the object being drawn. Sylvia also shared anecdotes about the founding of Art Box and the self-portraits in the current exhibit Red Out Loud!

July 10, 2014: Considerations in Creating an Art Book
CCMA artist member Kirk Kain recently published a children's book entitled Stilts -- A Tale of Two Circus Misfits. Kirk wrote and illustrated the book, and shared his experience of preparing and publishing it. Kirk's presentation was of particular interest to artists who have considered using a book to  publicize their work, gain interest from galleries, or offer to family and friends.
June 12, 2014: The Art of Collage with Aleta Jacobson
Aleta Jacobson, the owner of 511 Art Studio in Upland, exhibited at CCMA in 2013 as part of Rough Around the Edges, the annual member exhibit of the Southern California Collage Society, which she serves as president. She presented a step--by-step demonstration resulting in a completed collage work of art.

May 8, 2014: Monoprint Demonstration with Todd Smith
  Upland artist and CCMA member Todd Smith demonstratesdthe technique of monoprint, a single impression of an image made from a wood block, litho stone or metal plate. Participants each made a monoprint.

April 10, 2014: Milford Zornes -- Connections with Bill Anderson
Bill Anderson, watercolorist, author, art gallery owner, and friend and painting companion to Milford Zornes presented a behind-the-scenes commentary on some of the paintings in the current Milford Zornes exhibit and described his experiences of painting with Milford weekly during the last 11 years of Milford's life.

March 13, 2014: Archival Framing with Juan and Susie Thorp of Bunny Gunner Art Services
Artist Juan Thorp and his wife Susie, owners of Bunny Gunner Art Services in Claremont, explained the importance of archival framing for conserving works of art and discussed options for glass, matting and hanging wire.

Open Studio at CCMA
Fridays from 11 am – 3 pm
Where artists meet to create and share their artwork in an unstructured environment.

Open Studio at CCMA is a place for artists to come together and create art in the presence of other artists. It is intended to foster creativity, exchange, conversation, encouragement and freedom of artistic expression. All artists are welcome and invited to participate.

Open Studio at CCMA is held every Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. Artists should bring all their own supplies + a sack lunch, drinks and snacks as desired. CCMA will provide a coffee maker, refrigerator and small microwave for the use of participants.
Free for CCMA members
$20 for guests
