LORSER FEITELSON 1898 - 1978Lorser Feitelson was born in Savaannah, George and raised in New York City where he was home-schooled by his art-loving father. Feitelson studied in Paris in 1919 and also made numerous trips to Corsica, Italy. He returned to the United States in 1927 and moved to Los Angeles. With Stanton Macdonald-Wright, he was assigned to oversee the WPA murals project on the West Coast. In the mid-1940s Feitelson developed the use of biomorphic abstraction or Magical Forms, which were a bridge between the figuration of his early romanticism and post-surrealism. From 1956 to 1963, as Feitelson hosted a television series on NBC called Feitelson on Art. In 1959 Feitelson was featured in the landmark exhibition Four Abstract Classicists at the San Francisco Museum of Art with his peers Karl Benjamin, Frederick Hammersly. The exhibition later traveled to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It was curated by Los Angeles-based critic and curator Jules Langsner, who coined the phrase Hard Edge Color Forms to describe the style. Feitelson’s aesthetic expression evolved into ever more minimalist form, employing challenging palettes and sensuous, tapering lines in a flat field. He taught life drawing classes at Art Center College of Design until his retirement in the late 1970s. Clilck on a thumbnail below to see an enlarged image and start a slide show of XXXXX works.
