Melanie Walden

Artifact maker | Ontario, California

Artist Statement: Creative process and tactile work are the driving forces igniting curiosity in exploring my own mind. An introspective navigation searching for memories and experiences to generate a palette of psychological materials that my hands and eyes manifest into physical form.

Art and the creative process can have vastly different meanings to individuals. I create because when I do, I feel purposeful in my own body. My work process belongs to me and the release of “finished” work surrenders that belonging. It is a shared experience that I hope will resonate with someone, and activate or reactivate, affirm or reaffirm their own value in creating.

Artist Biography: Excavator and artifact maker, Melanie Walden aims to extract expressions of every sensory form and transform them into visual artifacts. Garments, photographs, writings, prints and found objects are some of the tools she uses to interpret the dialogue of her creativity.

Melanie was raised by creative and musically-talented parents who daily surrounded her with conceptual and operational process. Refining a creative innateness took Melanie down an unconventional higher education path, leading her to London, England to study Artifact at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. Melanie has shown her art in galleries, published writings, and started her own business, Curated Chronicles, Inc. Melanie works and resides in Southern California.

Lucien van Oosten

Artist | Glendora, California

Artist Statement: As an artist, I work hard to develop paintings that speak both to me and to others about the beauty that exists in nature. Before I begin painting I read extensively about the specific animal or scene I am about to recreate on canvas. I do not merely want to capture the image with my brushes; rather, with careful, colorful strokes, I want to give that animal life. I use the colors I mix to create depth and perspective in my compositions. As I create my art, I use the illusion of how cooler colors move away, and how warmer colors move towards the viewer.

Artist Biography: Lucien F.A. van Oosten was born on the island of Java, Indonesia to Dutch parents. During the Socialist uprising in Indonesia, his parents and two-year-old Lucien moved to The Netherlands, then immigrated to the United States in 1957 and settled in Pasadena. Lucien is a naturalized US citizen and lives with his wife in Glendora. Now retired, during his career as a senior engineering specialist for an aviation life support company, he developed an award-winning design for a composite helmet-mounted display used by the US military. He has also received numerous awards for his artwork from the Art Department at Citrus College and several open-juried exhibitions in Southern California.
