Rose Calderon

Ceramic artist and painter
San Dimas, California

Artist Statement: My passion and influence for my art arises from my family’s origin in the Southwest and New Mexico regions of the United States, whose roots go back centuries to indigenous culture. I grew up in a working-class family that placed a spiritual emphasis on the natural beauty of the earth, the plants, the sky, the colors and the spirit of the people. This influence, combined with 40 years of living in Southern California, enriches my sight of the magic and unity of the tapestry that encompasses the diversity of our people, communities and environment. I am drawn to creating art that expresses the authenticity and new beginnings of life found in children, women, movements and nature.

Artist Biography: I am a Latina of Mexican American heritage, born in Colorado but whose family had roots in New Mexico. I lived in a small town in Northern Colorado for 29 years until I moved to Southern California in 1984. I have always loved art. For two years I studied the arts in college before marrying, having two sons and working full time. Simultaneously, I was involved in social movements and community organizing. Twenty-eight years later I was again able to pursue training in the art of jewelry-making, pottery, drawing and painting.
